Auckland to host its first ever Monster Energy Super X round

Revolutionary supercross series to host two New Zealand races in 2010

Thursday July 8, 2010

The promoters of Super X, the Australasian Supercross Championship, have confirmed they will be bringing their hugely successful series to Auckland for the first time in 2010, with North Harbour Stadium set to host round four of the seven round series on November 13.

The Auckland round will be the first of two planned for New Zealand with the second to take place in Dunedin at Carisbrook Stadium on Saturday November 20.

All of Australia and New Zealand's best supercross riders including two times world supercross champion Monster Energy Kawasaki's Chad Reed (AUS) and New Zealand's greatest supercross rider Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda/Red Bull's Ben Townley (NZ), will battle it out on a full sized US designed supercross track for a complete round of the revolutionary series.

Reed and Townley have been racing head to head in the AMA Pro Motocross Championship currently underway in the USA, with Townley achieving two podium finishes in the last two rounds to put him equal fourth overall and closely behind Reed who is in second.

"It's going to be an epic battle between Townley and Reed, especially with Townley in such good form leading into to the biggest supercross event ever held in his country," said Managing Director of Global Action Sports, Michael Porra.

"We are so pleased to be having a race in Auckland and expanding the series in New Zealand after the huge success of our first ever round there [Hamilton] last year.

"New Zealand has produced some amazing racing talent and our series will allow further growth of the sport as well as provide the country's future supercross stars with the opportunity to compete on world class tracks against world class competitors on home soil," concluded Porra.

A majority of the riders competing in the series in Australia will make their way to New Zealand for both rounds including Jagermeister KTM's Mike Alessi (USA), who is currently fourth overall in the AMA world motocross series in the USA, CDR Rockstar Yamaha's Jay Marmont, Rockstar Motul Suzuki twins Matt and Jake Moss as well as young gun JDR Motorex KTM's Tye Simmonds.

Monster Energy Super X is expected to inject almost $2.2 million into the Auckland area by attracting fans from all over New Zealand and Australia as well as Super X personnel, teams, riders, families, sponsors and manufacturers, who in a huge logistical exercise, will air freight all bikes and equipment direct from Australia the week before the round.

More than 15,000 spectators are expected to attend, with at least 6,000 of them to make their way from outside of Auckland filling hotels restaurants, pubs and shops.

The Monster Energy Super X was incepted in 2008 through a partnership between Chad Reed and Global Action Sports and has revolutionised the sport of supercross by introducing a range of exciting new race formats, live television coverage of every round and the construction of innovative full sized US designed supercross tracks for the first time in Australia and New Zealand.

This year's series will continue to grow the sport of supercross in Australia and New Zealand with a range of exciting new initiatives and the biggest rider line up ever assembled outside of North America. Every race will once again be televised on TV ONE's popular Sunday motorsport show as well as delayed coverage in the USA, Europe and Asia.

The track will be custom designed and built by internationally renowned American track designer, Jason Baker, and will incorporate many unique challenges for riders.

Rounds of Super X will extend into Asia in coming years and the series is scheduled to allow top riders from around the world to compete in the championship.
